The Botanic Gardens is in bloom! It is absolutely beautiful there right now and is the perfect place for an assortment of backdrops. We shot these images in the Japanese Garden where the dogwoods and daffodils are blooming. I knew I wanted to give the presented images from this session a faded vintage feel to them... so here they are. Enjoy!

Beautiful light. Late afternoon. Awesome location. And I even let the kids pick out their outfits in exchange for photographing them... again. Bribery? I suppose. But, everybody won! They got to run around and be themselves in an outfit that they wanted to wear while I photographed them being themselves. Just what I was wanting! In this kind of situation, anything goes!

I was so excited when Mrs. Ann asked me to take some portraits of her family while they were all in town for the Christmas holidays. They decided to all wear red, which turned out lovely... very festive and merry and bright. Ann and Arne have such a sweet family, including three adorable grandchildren. Brad and Molly are part of the Herren Family shoot from the last post. I wanted to post a few of their images by themselves because they had such a different feel to them. Brad is a musician and he and his wife had such an artsy and vintage look to them, I had a challenge of interpreting their personality into images that would clearly be 'Brad and Molly'. Everyone is so different in personality, dress, family dynamics and even location and I love these challenges set before me on each shoot. Brad and Molly, it was a pleasure to meet you!

The Herren Family, Extended

It was very, very cold when we shot this extended family session, which consisted of 4 families, and I appreciate everyone for putting up with me and the elements that morning. The kids especially were troopers! Thank you so much for allowing me to come out and spend the morning with you all! The first few images I made very golden in color... I love the warmth it creates! This first image is my FAVORITE! I have more images of Anita's brother and sister-in-law to blog later. They had such a unique feel to them and I shot images of them in such a different way than the rest of the family that they will get a post all to themselves!

Good Morning Sunshine

I admit it... I am lazy in the morning. It takes me a while to fully wake up from a good nights slumber. And I love to lay around cozy in bed while I do slowly wake up. But, my kids rarely let me do that. They are up and at 'em at the crack of dawn. When the first rays of sun come peeking through the window, they are up and hungry and thirsty and needing this or that.

I secretly love when they come bounding in bed to snuggle up for a minute or two. It is in these moments when I can count my blessings, just before another busy day begins and I have to start thinking about all the things that need to get done that day. Blessings.. here are one, two and three!! And what beautiful light, that early morning light!

Recent Landscapes/ Psalm 19:1

"The heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim the work of his hands." Psalm 19:1 When I first started photographing, I was always drawn to landscapes. I was intrigued by the way light played on particular parts of the whole, making something otherwise ordinary become something extraordinary. I find myself equally interested in photographing people now, if not more so, but landscapes will always hold a special place in my heart. It is in the middle of the woods where I feel like I am most walking in the presence of the Lord and that He is showing me these tiny secret spaces of His handiwork. It is amazing to me too that all these images have different feels to them, yet they all were taken in a 2 mile circumference around a lake!

Even in the Rain/ Isaac at 9 months

So, it was raining, again, on the day of our planned session. I called Susan just to touch base and make sure they were still a go for the shoot, which would have to be inside now, but as I hung up, I had a great idea....all a rainy day needs is some umbrellas!! I'm so glad Susan and Chasen were up to do this, as it was cold, wet and still drizzling rain, but, through this experience I have learned that most every occasion is a great occasion to shoot. You just have to embrace whatever the day brings. I love the umbrella images! Thank you Susan, Chasen and Isaac for being such great sports! I had a great time with your family.

The McClure Family

Mom McClure wanted some family images, so family images she got! Plus, her eldest son, Ethan, is a senior!! So we had to get some portraits of just him to celebrate this occasion. We spent the afternoon together and made some really fantastic portraits of everyone. I love the ones of the whole family in the boat- what troopers everyone was to go along with my vision! What a fun morning! The McKelroy's are good friends of ours and I was so excited when they asked me to take some family portraits for them! We shot this session at two different locations, but we started the shoot at their home, which I love to do. Shooting at the family home allows kids to feel more comfortable all the way around- they are in their familiar settings, and they know they can always act themselves in their own home. Kids acting themselves allows me to capture their smiles, their laughter and their behaviors- their true self. Here are the McKelroy's!

I was perusing a Family Circle magazine and came to a teeny tiny article (it was only one paragraph long; I almost looked over it!!) about a website called joinmyvillage.com. What caught my attention was that I saw 'Malawi' in it. Turns out, CARE and General Mills have collaborated on creating this awesome program in an effort to fight global poverty. The Stout Family!

He is full of personality- always smiling, cooing, laughing, and very bright-eyed and alert. His sister and brother have fallen in love with him just as much as Ryan and I have. He is a wonderful blessing indeed!

Since I am very pregnant, I haven't taken any more sessions until after the baby. It is getting very hard- almost impossible- to maneuver. But, I'm still making images of my family. The other day, I set my kids in a rocking chair to take a few quick pics of them. My son got a little upset when Sierra wanted to hold him 'like a baby'... scroll down to image 4..... Sierra also took the one of me and my belly! She is quite the little photographer!
